Ursula began her accounting career in 1999 alongside a longtime Tax and Accounting firm where she gained valuable knowledge in the business. An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. What is an ITIN used for?<\/span><\/h6>

IRS issues ITINs to help individuals comply with the U.S. tax laws, and to provide a means to efficiently process and account for tax returns and payments for those not eligible for Social Security numbers. They are issued regardless of immigration status. ITINs do not serve any purpose other than federal tax reporting.<\/p>

An ITIN\u00a0does not<\/strong>:<\/p>

  • Authorize work in the U.S.<\/li>
  • Provide eligibility for Social Security benefits<\/li>
  • Qualify a dependent for Tax Credit Purposes<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n <\/section>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Do I need an ITIN?<\/span><\/h6>

    Does the following apply to you?<\/p>

    1. You do not have an SSN and\u00a0are not eligible\u00a0to obtain one, and<\/li>
    2. You have a requirement to furnish a federal tax identification number or file a federal tax return, and<\/li>
    3. You are in one of the\u00a0following categories:<\/li><\/ol>
      • Nonresident alien who is required to file a U.S. tax return<\/li>
      • U.S. resident alien who is (based on days present in the United States) filing a U.S. tax return<\/li>
      • Dependent or spouse of a U.S. citizen\/resident alien<\/li>
      • Dependent or spouse of a nonresident alien visa holder<\/li>
      • Nonresident alien claiming a tax treaty benefit<\/li>
      • Nonresident alien student, professor or researcher filing a U.S. tax return or claiming an exception<\/li><\/ul>
